INGREDIENT GLOSSARY
Find out about the ingredients that are new to you and why I use them
BONE BROTH
Beef and chicken bone broth are a superior source of nutrients than regular broth or bouillon cubes. You will add extra mineral and collagen when using bone broths. You can substitute bone broth for regular broth or bouillon if needed, but for the best nutrient density bone broth is the best.
CACAO POWDER
Cacao powder is unrefined powder from the cacao bean, which is where we get chocolate from. This is a more nutrient dense option to cocoa powder. Using cacao powder instead, you will increase your mineral content in your baking or shakes.
CANOLA-FREE MAYONNAISE
Most mayonnaise is made using canola oil, which is a GMO industrial oil that is high in Omega-6. This makes it pro-inflammatory, which damages the body. It's best to find a mayonnaise that uses another oil as the base, such as avocado oil or sunflower oil.
GRASS-FED BEEF
Beef can be a healthy addition to your diet, especially when choosing grass-fed beef. This is the traditional diet for cows and helps to produce a better product. Grass-fed beef is higher in Omega-3 and is typically hormone and anti-biotic free.
HERBAMARE
A wonderful combination of unrefined sea salt and 12 vegetables and herbs grown organically. Add extra flavour simply. Check out their website.
ORGANIC
Many fruits and vegetables are produced with a great deal of herbicides and pesticides which get into the food and can cause negative health effects. If you can't eat 100% organic, I would choose those items on the Dirty Dozen list.
RAW
Raw is most often used to talk about nuts, seeds and honey. In these cases, the item has not been heated, and is in its raw, natural form. Raw honey contains all of its original enzymes and traces of the pollen it was made from. Raw nuts and seeds are unroasted, and just the way they came from the plant.
SEA SALT
Salt is a whole conversation on it's own, but I want to focus on unrefined sea salt since nothing has been added to it and it still contains all it's trace minerals. Some great ones to look for are: Himalayan 'pink' salt, Redmond's Real Salt and Celtic Sea Salt
UNSULFURED
Fruits that are dried sometimes use sulfur dioxide to preserve their original colour. This preservative can be hard on the digestive system. I prefer to by dried fruit that is unsulfured.
UNPASTEURIZED
Some foods are put through pasteurization to help either reduce bacteria that could be harmful, or help to extend it's shelf life. Some foods are more beneficial unpasteurized, such as honey, since you maintain the healthy enzymes and trace pollen elements.
